Narcolepsy

Effective October 1, 2004, code 347, Cataplexy and narcolepsy, has been expanded to uniquely identify narcolepsy with or without cataplexy. In addition, a new subcategory has been created to identify narcolepsy (with and without cataplexy) associated with other conditions. Narcolepsy refers to a chronic neurological disorder with the inability to normally regulate sleep and wakefulness. Symptoms are excessive daytime sleepiness, sleep paralysis (paralysis upon waking up or falling asleep), and vivid hallucinations. Other possible symptoms include disturbed nighttime sleep, leg jerks, nightmares, and frequent awakenings.
