Optic Nerve Hypoplasia

Effective October 1, 2006, a new code has been created to describe optic nerve hypoplasia. Optic nerve hypoplasia is a congenital abnormality, which can impair vision. It manifests as a small optic nerve, which appears as a small optic disc on ophthalmologic examination and may be accompanied by a peripapillary ring (the double ring sign). Optic nerve hypoplasia can be unilateral or bilateral and impair visual function mildly or severely. Children with poor vision resulting from this condition should be treated for refractive errors.
