Pneumothoraces

A pneumothorax is air in the pleural space, that is, air between the lung and the chest wall. Normally the pleural space is occupied by only a small amount of lubricating fluid between the visceral and parietal pleural surfaces. The pressure within that space is less than normal atmospheric pressure, which is an essential physiologic requirement for the maintenance of lung inflation.
