The Central Office on ICD-9-CM has received requests for clarification of the terms principal diagnosis and secondary diagnoses used in the Final Rules on Prospective Payment for Medicare Inpatient Hospital Services published by the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA). Requests have also been received for clarification of the phrase "after study," which appears in the definition for principal diagnosis in the Uniform Hospital Discharge Data Set (UHDDS).
