Pseudobulbar Affect

Effective October 1, 2011 code 310.8 has been expanded to uniquely identify pseudobulbar affect (310.81) and other specified nonpsychotic mental disorders following organic brain damage (310.89). Prior to this change, pseudobulbar affect was indexed to code 310.8, Other specified nonpsychotic mental disorders following organic brain damage. Pseudobulbar affect (PBA) is a neurologic disorder which triggers involuntary frequent and uncontrollable outbursts of crying, laughing or both. PBA occurs secondary to neurologic disease or injury and has been reported to occur in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), multiple sclerosis (MS), stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI)...
