Debridement procedures are performed for a variety of reasons but primarily to reduce the potential for complications that can become life threatening (e.g., sepsis, embolism, gas gangrene, hemorrhage) and to assist in healing. Debridement involves the removal of necrotic (dead), infected, damaged, or contaminated tissue in varying degrees.
