Reporting drugs and biologicals

The Central Office on HCPCS frequently receives requests for coding assistance pertaining to the correct reporting of drugs and biologicals that fall under HCPCS Level II J-codes. Based on the volume of these requests, we have decided to review some basic guidelines to assist in reporting these codes. CMS has instructed that hospitals should report all appropriate HCPCS codes and charges for separately reportable drugs, in addition to reporting the applicable drug administration codes.
