Respiratory Failure

Prior to October 1, 1998, code 518.81, Respiratory failure, encompassed acute, chronic, and acute and chronic respiratory failure in a single code. Code 518.81 has been revised to uniquely identify acute respiratory failure and respiratory failure NOS only. New codes have been created to separately classify chronic respiratory failure (518.83), and acute and chronic respiratory failure (518.84).
