Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)

Effective October 1, 2003, new codes have been created to report severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). The new codes should be used report the following situations: Contact with or exposure to SARS-associated coronavirus (V01.82), Infection, SARS-associated coronavirus (079.82) Pneumonia due to SARS-associated coronavirus (480.3) SARS is a respiratory illness caused by a new, previously unrecognized, coronavirus. SARS has recently been reported in Asia, North America, and Europe. Symptoms begin with a fever greater than 100.4 F.
