Effective October 1, 2011 a new code has been created to uniquely describe respiratory conditions due to smoke inhalation (508.2). In addition, a “use additional code” note has been added under categories 506 and 508 to help guide coders in the use of these codes in conjunction with the associated specific respiratory conditions. Previously, ICD-9-CM’s Alphabetic Index led to code 987.9, Toxic effect of unspecified gas, fume, or vapor, for smoke inhalation.
