Spinal Disc Prosthesis

Effective October 1, 2004, new codes have been created to report procedures related to the insertion, revision and replacement of spinal disc prostheses (84.60-84.69). Prior to this change, these procedures were captured with code 80.51, Excision of intervertebral disc. Although code 80.51 identified the removal of the intervertebral disc, it did not capture the replacement of the disc with a prosthesis. Spinal disc devices or prostheses involve the replacement of either the entire spinal disc or the replacement of the disc nucleus with new devices designed to restore disc height for patients with degenerative disc...
