Thoracoscopic Procedures on Thymus

Effective October 1, 2007, new codes were created to identify the following procedures on the thymus gland via thoracoscopic approach: partial excision (07.83), total excision (07.84), incision (07.95) and other and unspecified operations (07.98). A thoracoscope is a type of endoscope, or flexible fiberoptic tube that is inserted into the thorax through a small incision while the tissues it encounters is visualized directly. Surgical tasks such as cutting, suturing and resection can also be accomplished through the thoracoscope, thus enabling a number of procedures to be performed without opening the chest.
