Thrombolytic Agents

Thrombolytic agents such as streptokinase, urokinase, and tissue plasminogen activator (T-PA), are used in selected cases of acute myocardial infarction, thromboembolic venous disease, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, and other conditions. Streptokinase is derived from group C strains of B-hemolytic streptococcal material. It is antigenic in humans, and because most humans have been exposed to streptococcal infections, streptokinase antibodies are present in most patients; therefore, when streptokinase is infused, enough potential activator must be given to neutralize the circulating antibody before a lytic state can be achieved.
