Thrombolytic therapy is used to treat acute myocardial infarctions (MI), thromboembolic venous disease, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, and more recently intracranial stroke. Prior to October 1, 1998, the infusion or injection of thrombolytic agents was reported using code 99.29, Injection or infusion of other therapeutic or prophylactic substance. As code 99.29 encompassed so many substances, code 99.10, Injection or infusion of thrombolytic agent, has been created to separate thrombolytic agents from the other substances classified to code 99.29.
