Toxic Shock Syndrome

Effective October 1, 2002, a new code has been created for the unique identification of toxic shock syndrome due to the severity of this illness. Prior to the creation of the new code, toxic shock syndrome was classified to 040.89, Other specified bacterial diseases. Toxic shock syndrome is caused by a bacterial infection. It was originally reported almost exclusively in menstruating women using high-absorbency tampons. The organism isolated was Staphylococcus aureus.
