Transfusion Associated Circulatory Overload (TACO)

Effective October 1, 2010, code 276.6, Fluid overload, has been expanded and a new code created to identify transfusion associated circulatory overload (TACO). Before this change, there was no specific ICD-9-CM diagnosis code for TACO. Transfusion-associated circulatory overload (TACO) is a cardiogenic pulmonary edema. This condition occurs when too much fluid is transfused or by the rapid transfusion of blood leading to increased intravascular volume and elevated hydrostatic pressure exceeding the physiologic capacity of the cardiovascular system.
