Transjugular and Laparoscopic Liver Biopsy

Effective October 1, 2007, new codes (50.13-50.14) were created to describe transjugular and laparoscopic liver biopsy. Liver biopsy is the most reliable way of obtaining histiological information on the condition of the liver. Abnormal liver biopsy results may confirm alcoholic liver disease, cancer of the liver, hepatitis, hemochromatosis and cirrhosis. When a transjugular liver biopsy is performed, a catheter is advanced into the right internal jugular vein, through the right atrium and into the right hepatic vein.
