We are trying to determine the appropriate CPT coding for a transurethral prostate biopsy. Sometimes an instrument such as a cutting loop or clamshell grasper is used, but the instrument utilized is not always documented in the procedure report. We were instructed to report CPT code 55705, Biopsy, prostate; incisional, any approach. The encoder directs us to an unlisted CPT code 55899, Unlisted procedure, male genital system. Would the particular type of instrument used lead us to CPT code 55705? Would a transurethral prostate biopsy utilizing a cutting loop or clamshell grasper be considered an incisional biopsy as stated by the auditor? How should a transurethral prostate biopsy be coded? ...
