Twice Yearly ICD-9-CM Coding Updates

Section 503(a) of Public Law 108-173 includes a requirement for updating ICD-9-CM codes twice a year instead of the current process of annual updates on October 1 of each year. This requirement is included as part of the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003. This requirement related to the recognition of new technology under the hospital inpatient prospective payment system (IPPS). The legislation covers all ICD-9-CM codes, both diagnosis and procedure codes.
