Understanding Current Pacemaker Technology

Current pacemaker technology has required revisions in the ICD-9-CM codes to describe that technology. Coding guidelines for these revisions which became effective October 1, 1987, can be referenced in theMay-June 1987 issue of Coding Clinic, pages 1-10. This article provides additional information that describes the purpose of pacemaker implantations including the difference between single chamber, dual chamber, rate responsive, and temporary pacemakers. The function of the electrode or lead connected to the pacemaker is also reviewed so that the coder understands the necessity of assigning codes for both the pacemaker insertion and the implantation of the lead.
