The following information is intended to clarify the appropriate use of the new codes implemented on October 1,1994 for subcategory 414.0, Coronary atherosclerosis. As a result of the new codes some information previously published in Coding Clinic has changed. This refers to Coding Clinic November-December 1986, pages 5-6, and First Quarter 1994 Coding Clinic, pages 3-4, regarding the use of code 996.03, Mechanical complication due to coronary bypass graft. Coders should continue to assign code 996.03, Mechanical complications of the bypass graft, for conditions such as acute (abrupt) closures and leakage at the anastomosis site...
