Vascular Access Devices and Venous Catheterization

Venous catheterization is a way to access veins. A venous catheter is used to deliver medications, intravenous fluids, or obtain blood samples. Simple venous catheters and vascular access devices (VADs) are two different methods of venous catheterization. Simple venous catheters are sterile catheter systems. They are inserted into a peripheral vein such as the cephalic vein. Their insertion is not an operative procedure. General anesthesia is not usually required, although local anesthesia may be used.
