Ventilator Associated Pneumonia

Effective October 1, 2008, code 997.3, Respiratory complications, has been expanded to uniquely identify ventilator associated pneumonia (997.31). Prior to this change, ventilator associated pneumonia was coded to code 999.9, Other and unspecified complications of medical care, not elsewhere classified with the appropriate code for the specific type of pneumonia. Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a lung infection that generally develops in people who are on mechanical ventilation through an endotracheal or tracheostomy tube.
