New Tabular Convention Effective October 1, 2002, a new convention providing sequencing instruction has been introduced in Volume 1 (Tabular List of Diseases) of the ICD-9-CM. The instruction can be found following a code as: Code, if applicable, any causal condition first: This note indicates that if a causal condition were present, it would be sequenced before the code to which this note is attached.
