Admissions, including transfers from another hospital, for weaning the patient from mechanical ventilatory support following an episode of respiratory failure (or pulmonary insufficiency), are coded as follows: If the patient is under active treatment for the underlying cause, such as treatment for pulmonary infection, emphysema, or chronic obstructive lung disease, code and sequence that condition first.
