Winter 1993 pages 22-25 Coding Clarification Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Introduction The paranasal sinuses are air spaces lined by a mucous secreting membrane that connect to the nasal cavity through small openings. Another word for this opening is an ostium. If the ostium of a sinus becomes blocked, obstruction of mucous flow occurs resulting in stagnation and infection. This is usually associated with marked thickening of the lining mucous membrane.
