Take charge of new EMG add-on codes to clarify lingering questions, avoid denials

Until this year, coding electromyography (EMG) testing of the extremities was fairly simple. You selected from among codes 95860-95864, based on the number of extremities tested (e.g., if the doctor tested both legs, you selected 95861[EMG, two extremities]).

Now, though, according to CPT 2012 coding rules, you will use those codes only when no nerve conduction studies (NCS) are performed on the same day.
