Infectious Diseases
The ICD-9-CM classification has been expanded through the creation of fourth and fifth-digits to allow for the identification of particular types of microorganisms in several bacterial and viral disease categories.
It should be noted that a code for infectious bacteria should not be assigned as the etiology of an infection based solely on gram stain, unless documented by the physician when the clinical record supports the diagnosis.
In category 008, Intestinal infections due to other organisms, fifth-digits have been added to subcategory 008.0, Escherichia coli [E. coli], to allow for the identification of specific types of E. coli...
