Positron emission tomography (PET) scans

PET is a noninvasive diagnostic imaging procedure that assesses the level of metabolic activity and perfusion in various organ systems of the human body. Cross-sectional tomographic images are obtained by the positron camera (tomograph), which emits a radioactive tracer substance (radiopharmaceutical). A Program Memorandum was released by the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) regarding the expansion of Medicare coverage for PET scans. The instructions include new HCPCS codes and are effective for services provided on or after July 1, 2001.
