CMS calls for an end to Local Level III HCPCS codes

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is taking a big step toward the full implementation of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) claims processing standards with the announcement that all intermediaries and carriers must eliminate local Level III HCPCS codes by October. The message came in Program Memorandum AB-02-005. It can be read at www.hcfa.gov/pubforms/transmit/AB02005.pdf.
