New HCPCS codes for pathogen-reduced blood products
Pathogen-Reduced Blood Products represents a means to reduce the risk of transfusion transmitted infections by inactivating a broad range of pathogens such as viruses, bacteria and parasites that may be present in donated blood. The term “pathogen reduction” describes various techniques (including treatment with Amotosalen and UVA light) used on blood products to eliminate certain pathogens and reduce the risk of transfusion-associated infections.
