Effective October 1, 2003, new codes have been created to report severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). The new codes should be used report the following situations:
Contact with or exposure to SARS-associated coronavirus (V01.82),
Infection, SARS-associated coronavirus (079.82)
Pneumonia due to SARS-associated coronavirus (480.3)
SARS is a respiratory illness caused by a new, previously unrecognized, coronavirus. SARS has recently been reported in Asia, North America, and Europe.
