Prior to October 1, 2002, the codes for varicose veins distinguished those with ulcers or inflammations, but not other symptoms associated with this problem. A new code 454.8 has been created to report varicose veins with other complications (edema, pain, and swelling), and code 454.9 has been modified to report asymptomatic or uncomplicated varicose veins.
