Introduction
The paranasal sinuses are air spaces lined by a mucous secreting membrane that connect to the nasal cavity through small openings. Another word for this opening is an ostium. If the ostium of a sinus becomes blocked, obstruction of mucous flow occurs resulting in stagnation and infection. This is usually associated with marked thickening of the lining mucous membrane. At this point, surgical enlargement of the opening into the nose may be considered sometimes, along with removal of the thickened infected lining mucous membrane.
