Pericardiocentesis and Pericardial Drainage Changes for 2020
For the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) 2020 code set, significant changes were made in the Pericardium subsection to reflect current clinical practice. Codes 33010, 33011, and 33015 were deleted, and new codes 33016, 33017, 33018, and 33019 were established. New guidelines were also added to describe appropriate reporting of pericardiocentesis and percutaneous pericardial drainage with insertion of an indwelling catheter. This article discusses these changes to clarify the appropriate intent and use of these procedures.
