The use of the balloon endoscopic technique for dilation of a given sinus ostium is performed to displace soft tissue and bone of the maxillary, frontal, or sphenoid sinus ostia. The balloon endoscope is similar to other standard sinus endoscopy instrumentation (eg, forceps, curettes, punches, microdebrider), but differs in that the endoscope displaces soft tissue and/or bone but does not remove it from the operative site.
