Question: A bilateral renal angiogram is performed with both a first-order selective ("selective") catheter placement for the right renal arteriography and a second-order catheter placement ("superselective") for the left renal arteriography. In light of the new 2012 bundled codes for renal angiography, is this procedure reported with bilateral superselective code 36254, even though both kidneys were not superselected?
Answer: No. When one renal arteriogram is performed through a catheter placed in a first-order vessel and the other superselective or second or higher order vessel, the procedure should be reported with code 36251...
