Actual structural causes of dilation of the renal collecting system include urinary stones, tumors or complications of prior surgery. However, dilatation of the renal collecting system can also be seen without a functional or structural obstruction in patients following surgery, following a now relieved obstruction, or with congenital variations. The distinction between dilatation with obstruction and dilatation without obstruction is important as obstruction can lead to decreased kidney function and infection.
