Encounter for Speech Therapy due to Autism
When a patient presents for speech therapy for a language disorder that is due to an underlying condition, which code is sequenced as the first-listed diagnosis? For example, a four-year-old diagnosed with autism presents for speech therapy for severe language and social pragmatic deficits, including echolalia. Should the autism be assigned as the first-listed diagnosis since it is the underlying condition, or are the speech and language disorders sequenced first since they are the reason for therapy?
