CPT Knowledgebase - Jul 26, 2007

For CPT 2006, code 90649, Human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine, types 6, 11, 16, 18 (quadrivalent), 3 dose schedule, for intramuscular use, was designated with an Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval pending symbol. Upon review of the 2007 CPT codebook, I realize that the designation is no longer applied to code 90649. The removal of the FDA approval pending symbol leads one to believe that code 90649 has now received FDA approval. Is this correct? If so, is it appropriate to report code 90649 for either males or females, or is it only applicable to female patients?
