To perform a thoracoabdominal trauma examination, emergency physicians frequently use ultrasound for a Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (FAST). FAST includes a limited transthoracic echocar-diogram directed to the identification of the presence or absence of pericardial fluid, and a limited abdominal ul-trasound to identify free -intraperitoneal fluid utilizing three separate ultrasound windows (right and left upper quadrants and pelvic peritoneum).
