Don’t select ICD-10 codes from GEMS, index – you must consult tabular list

There’s no shortcutting when selecting ICD-10 codes. For example, you can’t code directly from I-9 to I-10 coding crosswalks or mappers; those are based on CMS’s General Equivalency Mapping lists (GEMs) and are not meant to be used for actual code selection. That’s because in many cases, there is no code that directly corresponds to a given ICD-9 code in ICD-10 and vice versa.
