New coding guidance: CMS will cover new nerve block and destruction codes, payers may follow

The struggle to understand genicular nerve procedures will end when two new CPT codes go into effect Jan. 1, 2020. In addition, practices will have codes for blocks and radiofrequency ablation of the sacroiliac (SI) joint nerves. In both cases the CPT editorial panel is “continuing the trend of making the image guidance inclusive and not separately billable,” notes Judi Blaszczyk, RN, CPC, ACS-PM, compliance auditor and education specialist, Auditing for Compliance and Education, Overland Park, Kan.
