5A02.0 Thyrotoxicosis with diffuse goitre
International Classification of Diseases for Mortality and Morbidity Statistics, 11th Revision, v2026-01
Thyrotoxicosis with diffuse goitre (also known as Graves disease or Basedow disease) is a form of autoimmune thyroid disease and is the leading cause of hyperthyroidism and thyrotoxicosis. In this condition, thyroid-stimulating immunoglobulins bind to and activate the TSH receptor, resulting in excessive thyroid hormone production. The disease is characterized by goiter, rapid and irregular heartbeat, weight loss, irritability, anxiety, and often a (slight) protrusion of the eyeballs.
