It is a measure of the acid-base balance in a sample of blood after the correction of a respiratory disorder. As a result, abnormal values for standard bicarbonate reflect only the metabolic component of an acid-base disturbance. Elevation indicates metabolic alkalosis, while depression indicates metabolic acidosis.
