descriptionUrinary magnesium excretion controls the magnesium balance. Urinary magnesium analyses may be helpful in assessing the cause of abnormal serum magnesium levels. Increased retention of magnesium can be seen in conditions that interfere with glomerular filtration. Poor diet, malabsorption, and hypoparathyroidism are some possible causes of a low urine magnesium. Urine magnesium testing pre and post therapeutic magnesium administration, may be necessary to understand the significance of a low serum magnesium.
