Cardiac Tamponade

Effective October 1, 2007, a new code has been created to identify cardiac tamponade (423.3). Cardiac tamponade is due to fluid accumulating in the pericardium resulting in increased pressure on the heart. This increased pressure causes a decrease in diastolic filling of the ventricles, which causes a decrease in cardiac output. Symptoms can be similar to heart failure or cardiogenic shock, with tachycardia, dyspnea, and orthopnea.
