Effective October 1, 2006, code 238.7, Other lymphatic and hematopoietic tissues, has been expanded to separately identify essential thrombocythemia and various myelodysplastic syndromes. Myeloproliferative disorders and myelodysplastic syndrome are now recognized as hematologic malignancies. For data consistency reasons, the ICD-9-CM will maintain these conditions with the neoplasms of uncertain behavior. Specific codes have been created to enable improved tracking.
