Undifferentiated Somatoform Disorder

A new code has been created effective October 1, 1996, for undifferentiated somatoform disorder. Prior to this date, it was assigned to code 300.81, Somatization disorder. The essential features of undifferentiated somatoform disorder are one or more physical complaints (e.g., fatigue, loss of appetite, gastrointestinal or urinary complaints) that persevere for six months or more. The etiology of these symptoms cannot be fully explained by any known general medical condition or the direct effects of a substance. Undifferentiated somatoform disorder is a residual category for those persistent somatoform presentations that do not meet full criteria for somatization...
