Hospitals are investing more in outpatient services, and wisely so. The migration of procedures from inpatient to outpatient settings is steadily increasing, as is the demand — from payers, physicians and patients — for outpatient care. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality reported that in 1980, 16 percent of surgical procedures were performed on an outpatient basis. This number grew to 57.7 percent in 2007.
